An emergency meeting of the Knesset Committee for Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs was convened as a result of the wave of anti-Semitism in Europe that has worsened following the launch of Operation Protective Edge in Gaza.

“We are witnessing an escalation of anti-Semitism around the world”, said committee chairman, MK Yoel Razvozov (Yesh Atid). “Just as the State of Israel is fighting Hamas terror, I call upon the countries whose ambassadors came to this meeting to protect the Jews in their countries. They are citizens of those countries”.

Nathan Norman Gelbart, head of Keren Hayesod-UIA in Germany, was one of the representatives of Jewish communities in Europe who were present at the meeting. He reported that the German-Jewish community is frightened “because there are things that have not occurred since 1933.”

MK Yaakov Litzman (United Torah Judaism) urged the ambassadors to call upon their governments to protect the freedom of religion and the rights of the Jews.
Dr. Vadim Slutsky, chairman of the Israeli Jewish Congress, said that the current situation is unacceptable: “Since the Holocaust we haven’t seen such a situation.
“We are witnessing anti-Semitic demonstrations in Europe from France to Poland that call for ‘death to the Jews’, ‘free Palestine’, etc. This is happening in practically every country in Europe, and primarily in the large communities, including Belgium and Germany”.
MK Yisrael Hasson (Kadima) asked whether the world’s major problem is Israel.
“What about Lebanon? Has the slaughter in Syria ended? What about the religious struggle in Iraq, which has already taken the lives of over 100,000 people? What about Libya? At the age of 7, I escaped from Syria. From that day on, I stopped running away. Anyone who wants to talk to me about morality should look at Kosovo, where 5,000 civilians were killed, at Iraq, where 27,000 were killed when the Americans entered in 2003. No state in the world has the right to preach morality to us.
“No Jew in Europe will be abandoned. Israel is at the forefront of the Western world and no one can deprive me of the right to protect myself.”
He warned Europe that if they don’t protect their Jewish citizens, the problem will very quickly arrive at their own doorstep.
