The General Assembly of the United Nations, which is usually not known as a forum that is sympathetic to Israel was witness to an exceptional event in which its chamber was put at the disposal of Israel and Jewish organizations for two hours to address the threat of BDS, the international anti-Israel boycott, sanctions and divestment movement.

Convened by Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, and co-sponsored by a number of organizations, including the World Jewish Congress and Keren Hayesod-UIA, the event brought more than 1,000 young people to the United Nations from around the United States to learn what they could do to combat the boycott movement.

In a video message from Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "The BDS has nothing to do with human rights. We must fight the BDS. I thank you for defending Israel. I thank you for fighting the BDS I'm proud of you".

Keren Hayesod-UIA World Chairman Eliezer (Moodi) Sandberg represented our organization at the gathering. Introduced by Israeli actress Noa Tishby, who noted the work that Keren Hayesod is doing to mobilize Jewish communities around the world to combat BDS, Sandberg noted that he was standing in for Mr. Alexander Mashkevich, the chairman of Keren Hayesod for the countries of the former Soviet Union, who was unable to come to the United States for the event.

Sandberg spoke of how heartwarming it was to see so many young Jews stepping forward to address the issue of BDS. Recalling the Hebrew expression “Hineni,” “Here I am,” he said those gathered at the event understood that there is a new battle to be fought on Israel’s behalf. “You are here because you understood that this is the time to step forward and say ‘here I am.”

Speakers at the event included World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder and Israeli Supreme Court Justice Elkyakim Rubinstein.
