ALEH - Rehabilitative care for severely disabled children

Rehabilitative care for severely disabled children

Children with severe physical and cognitive disabilities are many times underestimated. Unable to express their feelings, needs and wants, they are often considered beyond hope of rehabilitation and development. ALEH’s experience proves otherwise. Started in 1982 by a group of parents of disabled children, and fuelled by a belief that even the highly disabled can develop beyond the boundaries of their prognoses, ALEH has shown time and again that intensive therapies and paramedical treatments can change lives.

Today, over 650 severely disabled children, from
newborns to young adults, receive high-level medical and rehabilitative care at ALEH’s four live-in facilities, making it Israel’s largest care network for this group. In Jerusalem, Gedera, Bnei Brak, and at a rehabilitative village in the Negev, a devoted, multidisciplinary team of therapists, doctors, nurses and caregivers, educational and administrative workers and a cadre of volunteers work together to provide for their physical, medical and emotional needs. In addition, ALEH is building a new rehabilitative educational facility in the center of the country to service 300 more children from kindergarten through high school.

ALEH’s paramedical enrichment program offers
intensive therapy beyond the standard provided for by Israeli health insurances. The treatments have resulted in many children learning to stand, feed themselves, and move their limbs in a controlled manner – unthinkable in their original diagnoses. As a result ALEH must rely on support from outside sources – to provide the highest level of care for each child.
